About Invest In Knowledge

Invest in Knowledge (IKI) is a Malawian not for profit organization which has over 20 years’ experience in conducting rigorous qualitative and quantitative research, managing partnership and building different research capacities in Malawi. IKI was established in 2004 and registered in Malawi in 2008 as Invest in Knowledge Initiative as a trust, where the “IKI” acronym originates from. It was established by graduate students from University of Pennsylvania who worked on one of the longest existing longitudinal studies in Malawi. The aim was to develop research capabilities in the local staff to see them grow from data collectors to researchers. The founders saw this vision been realized, a nd they totally left the organization in the hands of Malawians and young researchers that had grown both in experience and academically to run the organization. Over the years, IKI earned national and international reputation for transparent research management and commitment to quality and efficiency.

Why Us

IKI is in Zomba City, in the Southern Region of Malawi. Over the past 15 years, IKI has successfully conducted both qualitative and quantitative research for a wide range of national and international institutions. These include the Government of Malawi, World Bank, USAID, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Population Council, International Labor Organization (ILO), Concern Worldwide, Rockwool Foundation, Penn State University, Oxford University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Michigan, NORC, DIME, University of California San Francisco, University of California Berkely, among others. IKI has earned national and international recognition for its transparent research management practices and its strong commitment to working collaboratively with clients. This approach ensures the efficient use of project resources and the delivery of high-quality, reliable, and valid data.

Institutional Capacity and Experience

The IKI team is composed of experienced local researchers with strong expertise in qualitative and quantitative research design, data collection, data management, data analysis, and report writing in Malawi and across Southern Africa. IKI staff have contributed to numerous major research and evaluation projects, including leading work in social protection, agricultural production, education, health, social determinants of behavior change, behavioral factors influencing HIV transmission, and innovative approaches to program evaluation.

Fieldwork and Data Collection Capacity

IKI field teams are equipped with modern data collection technologies, including tablets, GPS devices, and mapping software, to support efficient coordination and high-quality data capture. The organization has the capacity to conduct both paper-based (PAPI) and electronic data collection using Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI), Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) and Audio Computer-Assisted Self-Interviewing (ACASI).
